Gov. Barbour to speak at Boys and Girls Club's annual fund-raiser

The Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi kicked off its biggest fund-raising campaign of the year Wednesday, announcing ticket sales for its annual community excellence dinner.
During a board meeting at the Boys and Girls Club, on 45th Avenue, several children announced to board members and reporters that Gov. Haley Barbour would be the guest speaker for this year's event.
The dinner will be July 27, at 6 p.m., at the Frank Cochran Center in Highland Park.
Melanie Mitchell, president of the board of directors, said it will include a steak dinner provided by Outback Steakhouse and awards for Youth of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Outstanding Boys and Girls Club Students and recognition of the organization's supporters.
Tickets for the event are $100 per person. Tables for 10 people are $1,000, $2,500, and $5,000.
The local Boys and Girls Club also hosted a breakfast this morning for about 20 local ministers and provided a tour in an effort to involve more churches with the organization.
Board member Betty Lou Jones said the ministers would be shown some of the club's tangible needs. She said the club currently is working with three area churches.
