ENTERPRISE Enterprise High School moved to within one game of the Class 2A state championship on Monday night with a 6-2 win over visiting Mooreville in the first game of the best-of-three championship series.
Wade Weathers pitched seven strong innings and struck out 10 batters to pick up the win and improve to 15-2 for the season.
The Bulldogs will travel to take on Mooreville tonight at 6 with a chance to win the 2A state championship.
Adam Simpson had a two-run home run and the Bulldogs scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings to pick up the victory.
The visiting Troopers took the first lead of the game in the top of the third inning. Chris Lucius reached on a bunt single and later scored on a two-out double by Russ Tally to make the score 1-0.
Enterprise took advantage of a mistake by Mooreville in the bottom of the third inning and took the lead for good.
Corey Irby reached when his pop-up was dropped. Scott Mosley followed with a single, and Lance Irby delivered a two-run double off the wall in left-center to make the score 2-1.
Zeb Swain followed with a single up the middle to bring in Irby to make the score 3-1.
The Bulldogs added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Swain singled and moved to second on a bunt by Anthony Rawson. Weathers followed with a single to bring in Swain to make the score 4-1.
Simpson followed with a blast to right to give Enterprise a commanding 6-1 lead.
Simpson also kept the Bulldogs on top with his glove. He made a great diving catch in center and threw two runners out to help keep Enterprise on top.
He threw out a runner going to third base in the top of the sixth inning and Weathers finished off the rally attempt with a strikeout to help Enterprise keep a 6-1 lead.
In the seventh inning, Lucius was hit by a pitch and Mack Pettit singled. Josh Chism singled to bring in Lucius, but Pettit was gunned down at home by Simpson to give Enterprise two outs in the inning.
Weathers got the next batter to ground out and Enterprise held on for the 6-2 win to take the one-game advantage in the series.
The Bulldogs improved to 26-5 for the year with the win.
