Northeast blasts past Wayne

Since it was senior night, Danielle Smith wanted to do something special.
It only took 15 seconds for Smith to score the first goal of the game as the Northeast Lauderdale girls ran away with a 9-0 win over Wayne County in a Region 5-4A Soccer match.
In boys action, Northeast Lauderdale took another 9-0 win over the War Eagles.
Smith is the only senior for the Lady Trojans, who are now 12-2-2 overall and 3-0 in the region.
After taking the kickoff, Ivy Rawson and Smith passed the ball back and forth, as they ran for the goal. Rawson kicked the ball across the field to Smith, who booted a shot past the Lady War Eagle goal keeper.
Smith finished the game with two goals and two assists, and Rawson had two assists.
Northeast head coach Charles Coleman said he was pleased with the performance of his team in the frigid conditions.
Sophomore Candice White was the leading scorer completing a hat trick with three goals. White also had two assists.
Brittany Britan added two goals, and Lindsey Tingle and Eliza Gavin each scored one goal each.
Eighth grader Codi Holifield recorded the shut out for Northeast, making with one save. Holifield was one of the loneliest people on the field as the Lady Trojans stayed on offense for most of the game.
Coleman said he was concerned that his goalie might get too cold, so he tried to keep her prepared in case the ball came her way.
Smith said they key to the success has been the team play of the Lady Trojans.
The Northeast seniors boys were not to be outdone by the girls. Seniors Chad Bronson and Paul Tate combined for seven goals.
Ferry said he was please with the way his team moved the ball around.
Bronson scored four goals and added two assists as the Trojans advanced to 11-3 for the year and 3-0 in the region. Tate kicked in three goals with an assist, and Sorem Dahm scored twice.
The Northeast boys and girls will both return to action on Monday when the squads travel to Quitman for another region game.
