COLLINSVILLE The West Lauderdale High School boys' soccer team had to shake off some holiday rust to secure a home win Monday night.
The Knights (10-0-1) sent numerous shots over the net, but West Lauderdale forward Jarrod Moulds' two first half goals lifted the team to a 2-1 victory over the Neshoba Central Rockets.
West Lauderdale peppered Neshoba Central's goal with shots through out the game sending 15 shots on net and 18 shots wide, but the home team had trouble hitting the twine.
The Knights opened the contest with three quality scoring chances in the game's first eight minutes.
West Lauderdale winger Neil Robinson curled a crossing pass toward the Rockets' goal, but Neshoba Central's goalkeeper was able to punch the ball over the net. The Knights followed the near goal by sending a shot wide to the left and another over the top of the net.
Moulds broke the team's streak of misses in the game's 14th minute.
The striker fired a shot from the top of the Rockets' goal box that slipped inside the left goal post to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Moulds found the back of the net again in the game's 28th minute after he received a throw in deep in Neshoba Central's territory.
The freshman attacker settled the ball near the right, front corner of Neshoba Central's goal box and fired a shot at the keeper.
The ball skidded off the Rockets' goalkeeper's hands into the right side of the net for a 2-0 lead, that the Knights took into halftime.
Neshoba Central notched its lone score of the game at the 56-minute mark, with a goal from Tyler Adkins.
The Rockets attacker let loose a shot from 20 yard out that went off Knights goalkeeper Scott Truesdale's hands and trickled into the net.
Truesdale had only faced five shots prior to the goal, with four of his first five saves coming in the first half. He finished the game stopping eight of nine shots to record the win.
The West Lauderdale girls' squad was able to shake off its holiday-break rust a little quicker than the team's male counterparts.
The Lady Knights (6-1-3) tallied a 4-1 win over the Lady Rockets, scoring three goals in the second half.
Brittany Uhl scored the lone goal of the opening half for West Lauderdale, with 7:29 to play before the break. Sarah Birmingham picked up the assist on the goal.
Birmingham opened the scoring the second half scoring in the game's 48th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Uhl added the third goal of the game for the Lady Knights, with an assist from Kylie Rowell. Morgan Gullette tallied the last goal of the game for West Lauderdale.
Neshoba Central's Kinzie Gaines scored the lone goal for the visiting team in the second half.
The West Lauderdale boys' and girls' squads return to action on Monday when the teams host Clarkdale. The girls' contest is set to start at 6 p.m., and the boys' game will follow.
