ECCC's Smart wins honors at rodeo

MARSHALL, Mo. East Central Community College rodeo team member Chance Smart of Vardaman won honors in the Bull Riding competition at the season-opening Missouri Valley College Rodeo held Sept. 25-27.
Smart won the Short Go competition, finished third in the Long Go and placed second in the Average with 157 points, just a few points behind first-place winner Thomas Calliham, a member of the host team, who had 162 points.
Drew Walters of Sylva Bay Academy and Matthew Burke of Neshoba Central also qualified for the Bull Riding competition. Zan Tillman of Union advanced to the Short Go competition in Calf Roping and placed seventh overall.
The ECCC men finished seventh in the overall competition with 75 points.
The University of Tennessee-Martin won the men's division with 275 points. Other colleges and their point totals included Missouri Valley College, 200; University of West Alabama, 197.50; University of Arkansas-Monticello, 180; Troy State University, 150; Murray State University, 95; and Southern Arkansas University, 40.
The University of Tennessee-Martin also won the women's competition with 235 points. Rounding out the top five were University of West Alabama, 135; Missouri Valley College and the University of Arkansas-Monticello, both with 120 points; and Murray State University, 30.
The ECCC women's team did not finish in the top five.
East Central Community College is scheduled to participate in several rodeos in October, beginning with competition at Southern Arkansas University Oct. 2-4. The Warriors and Lady Warriors will also compete at Troy State University on Oct. 9-11, and at the University of West Alabama, Oct. 23-25. The annual ECCC Warrior Showdown Rodeo will be held Oct. 30-Nov. 1 at the Neshoba County Coliseum in Philadelphia.
