The terrier connection

By Staff
Sept. 14, 2003
U.S. Sen. Trent Lott greeted President Bush enthusiastically when Air Force One arrived in Jackson on Friday. Later, at the fund-raiser for Haley Barbour, Bush spoke of Lott's value to Mississippi in glowing terms. He even noted that the two families have a common interest in Scottish terriers.
Bush had admonished Lott after the then-Senate Majority Leader's comments nine months ago at Sen. Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party. Many observers believe the president's rebuke contributed to Lott's loss of his powerful position in the Senate.
So, is all well again between the two? We may find out before long. There's another presidential election in 2004 and Bush may want Lott's support; and, Lott is writing his memoirs, a book you have to believe will cover this exacting period in his political career from his own point of view.
