East Central Community College has hired Philadelphia High School head coach Steve Cheatham, according to an ECCC press release Saturday. Cheatham, who guided the Tornadoes to an 10-2 record and Class 2A playoff berth in 2000, will coach linebackers and special teams, according to ECCC head coach Terry Underwood. Cheatham, who compiled a 38-11-1 record in four seasons at Philadelphia, began his coaching career in 1978 at his high school alma mater, Neshoba Central High School, where he served as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator until 1993.
Meridian High School will launch a girls' fast-pitch softball program during the upcoming school year. And when MHS officials began a search for someone to head up that program, they looked for experience. Susan Frazier, who most recently was the softball coach at North Pontotoc High School, has been hired to guide the Lady Wildcats' new program next Spring. Frazier will also take over the volleyball program at Meridian High, and MHS principal James Bounds said there's a lot of enthusiasm surrounding her arrival.

It must have taken a little rain to wake the North team up in the championship game of the State Games baseball tournament. After dropping their first game Sunday by a 6-4 count and forcing a winner-tak-all second game, the North responded with a 14-5 thrashing of the South to claim their second consecutive gold medals. The final game was shortened to seven innings due to rain that soaked the field and caused several rain delays in play in order to repair the playing surface at MCC Field.
Chris Crowe, Alex Shields, Russell Thompson, Gene Gibson, Jason Anders and Britt Pollock combined to shoot 32-under par 110 to win the 26th Annual Buddy McGhee Memorial Benefit Golf Tournament Sunday at the Briarwood Country Club. The six-some shot 54-56 during the two-day tournament which benefits the American Cancer Society.

TORONTO The waiting is nearly over. A decision is near. It's finally E-Day. That's when everybody is supposed to find out whether Eric Lindros will play for the New York Rangers or the Philadelphia Flyers. Arbitrator Larry Bertuzzi was to announce his decision at 11 a.m. EDT on a conference call linking reporters and broadcasters from all NHL cities. League president-elect Gil Stein will join in from Chicago. Bertuzzi will read his decision in its entirety and then the NHL will fax his report, the league said in a release.
