Meridian downs Belhaven Blazers on the court

JACKSON Meridian Community College took a pair of tennis wins over homestanding Belhaven College on Thursday.
The MCC men and women both took 9-0 wins over the NAIA school. The Meridian men had two matches go to three sets on the way to the lopsided win.
Matt McElhaney beat Philip Oglesby 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 in No. 2 singles, while Bobby Barton outlasted Derrick Whittington 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 in No. 3 singles.
Will Wiggins beat Vince McZeek 6-4, 6-2 in No. 1 singles, while Brad Dearman beat Grant Callen 6-1, 6-2 in No. 4 singles. Other singles matches saw Kevin McDonald defeated Garrett Walker 6-0, 6-0 and Dustin Davidson down Willie Green, 6-2, 6-0.
Doubles action saw Wiggins and McElhaney beat Oglesby and Whittington 8-6, Dearman and Barton defeat McZeek and Callen, 8-4 and McDonald and Davidson down Green and Walker 8-0. The Lady Eagles won all six of the matches they played, plus three others by forfeit to take the 9-0 win.
Charlotte Heidelberg bounced back from a first-set loss to take a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Larissa Robinson in No. 1 singles.
In other singles action Megan Chivas defeated Keri Elliott 6-0, 6-0, Cassie Joyner beat Katie McDermott 6-1, 6-1 and Jill Hathorn defeated Paige Chestnut, 6-3, 6-0.
In doubles action Heidelberg and Chivas beat Robinson and Elliott 8-4 and Joyner and Bailey downed McDermott and Chestnut 8-2.
In an earlier unreported match, MCC defeated Pearl River 5-4 in women's play.
MCC took two of three doubles matches, including one marathon showdown, to win the match by one. Meridian's No. 2 doubles team of Anna Bailey and Jill Hathorn took a thrilling 12-10 win over Pearl River, while the No. 1 doubles team of Heidelberg and Chivas beat Leigh McCombs and Tannia McAtee 8-6.
Heidelberg beat McCombs 6-0, 6-3 in No. 1 singles, while Chivas downed Miller 6-1, 7-5 in No. 2 singles and Hathorn defeated Ashley Ponder, 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 in No. 5 singles. PRCC's Tannia McAtee beat Joyner 6-2, 6-2 and Tonya Newton beat Anna Bailey, 2-6, 6-4, 11-9.
