    Hoops playoffs begin today

    The finals are slated to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday.
    7-2A at Bassfield: The Bay Springs boys and the Sumrall girls are the top seeds in this six-school event.
    Play begins on Tuesday with the Taylorsville (17-13) and Seminary girls playing at 4 p.m. The Sumrall and Seminary boys clash at 5:30 with the 7-22 Enterprise girls facing Bassfield at 7. At 8:30, the 13-14 Enterprise Bulldogs get the host Bassfield boys.
    On Thursday, the Sumrall girls meet the Enterprise-Bassfield winner at 4 followed by the Bay Springs boys taking on the Enterprise-Bassfield winner at 5:30. At 7, the Bay Springs girls will play the Taylorsville-Seminary winner with the Taylorsville boys meeting the Sumrall-Seminary survivor at 8:30.
    The finals are slated for 6 p.m. on Friday.
    6-1A at Union: Top seeds in this seven-team tournament belong to the Union boys and the defending Class 1A state champion Lake girls.
    Play opens today at 6 p.m. with the Pisgah girls playing Thomastown. At 7:30, the Pisgah boys face Pelahatchie.
    On Tuesday, the second-seeded Sebastopol girls (15-15) meet Edinburg at 4 p.m. with the other girls' contest having Union (12-14) taking on Pelahatchie at 7. On the boys' side, Thomastown (17-9) plays Edinburg at 5:30 with Sebastopol (13-15) squaring off with Lake (7-19) at 8:30.
    Thursday's semifinal action has the 25-3 Lake girls meeting the Pisgah-Thomastown winner at 7 with the 17-10 Union boys getting the Pelahatchie-Pisgah winner at 8:30.
    Finals are set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
    5-1A at McAdams: Top seeds belong to the Durant girls and the McAdams boys.
    Play begins today with the 18-12 Nanih Waiya girls taking on Ethel (15-18) at 6 p.m. The 5-20 Nanih Waiya boys play Durant at 7:30.
    Other first-round pairings have the 26-2 McAdams girls taking on Greenville St. Joseph and Noxapater squaring off with Ray Brooks. On the boys' side, Noxapater (5-12) meets Ethel (9-21) and Ray Brooks faces St. Joseph.
    The Durant girls play the Nanih Waiya-Ethel winner Thursday at 4:45 with the 19-7 McAdams boys getting the Noxapater-Ethel winner.
    The finals are slated for Friday.
    Academy Class A Central at DeKalb: The survivors from Districts 3 and 4 head to Kemper Academy where play begins on Tuesday.
    On the girls' side, Central (16-18) takes on CM&I (10-16) at 4 with Kemper (25-7) playing Tri-County (8-12) at 7. For the boys, CM&I faces Sylva-Bay (5-17) at 5:30 with Wayne (11-7) playing Tri-County (7-12) at 8:30.
    In Wednesday's first-round girls' games, the 12-15 Heidelberg girls face Sharkey-Issaquena (20-16) and Wayne (12-11) plays Rebul (30-8). On the boys' side, Heidelberg takes on Rebul at 5:30 with Newton (13-14) getting University Christian (29-9) at 8:30.
    Semifinals are slated for Friday afternoon (girls) and Friday night (boys) with the same sessions for Saturday's championship and consolation games.
    Academy AAA South at Centreville: Lamar's teams make the long ride to southwest Mississippi on Wednesday. The 5-24 Lady Raiders will play Central Private of Baker, La., at 4 p.m. with the 4-20 Raiders taking on Central Private (29-2) at 5:30.
    Other girls' teams competing are Copiah (35-2), Centreville, Central Hinds (19-14), Silliman Institute, Adams Christian, and Manchester (19-14).
    Other boys' teams are Central Hinds (21-8), Centreville, Manchester (10-15), Silliman (7-13), Adams, and Copiah (12-19).
    Academy AA South at Madden: The Leake Academy teams have first-round games on Wednesday. The 30-6 Rebelettes face Wilkinson at 7 p.m. with the 26-7 Rebels taking on Columbia at 8:30.
    Other girls' teams are Canton, Columbia, Presbyterian Christian, Oak Forest (19-8), Brookhaven (27-3), and East Rankin. The same schools are represented in the boys' division after the Bowling Green teams were forced to shut down their athletic program for the remainder of the school year.
    Semifinals are slated for Friday with championship and third-place games on tap for Saturday.
    Academy AA North at Holly Springs: Winston Academy's teams won the District 2 championships last week and received byes to Friday's semifinals since District 1 only has three schools.
    The Lady Patriots will play the Kirk-Marshall winner Friday at 2:30 with the Patriots taking on the Benton-Magnolia Heights winner at 6 p.m.
    The finals are set for Saturday.
