Excellence in education

DECATUR Five area East Central Community College students were recently inducted into the college's Hall of Fame, which is the highest honor a student can achieve at ECCC.
The students are: Emily Boggan and Natalie Boggan, daughters of Charles and Debbie Boggan of Decatur; Sarah Johnson, daughter of Randy and Joy Johnson of Hickory; Bridget Minor, daughter of Walter and Angie Minor of Little Rock; and Chris Webb, son of Stan and Debbie Webb of Philadelphia.
NEW ORLEANS Ryan Kelly McLemore has graduated cum laude from Tulane University School of Law. He is scheduled to take the Georgia bar exam in July.
He is the son of Joseph A. Cefalu and Sandra Riley Cefalu, formerly of Quitman, and Donnie McLemore, formerly of Meridian. He is the grandson of Lena Riley of Quitman and the late Morris Riley and Prentiss McLemore of Enterprise.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Senior history major Mitch Robinson of Meridian has received the Birmingham-Southern College President's Service Award.
The award recognizes those who have provided outstanding service to the college. Robinson, who has just completed his term as president of the Student Government Association, is the son of Greg and Nan Robinson.
DECATUR The following students have been selected to lead the East Central Community College Student Body Association for the 2001-2002 term: Andy Murphy of Meridian, president; Jennifer Cuchens of Newton, vice president; Miranda Faulk of Louisville, secretary and Missy Johnson of Hickory, treasurer.
DECATUR The Newton County High School Beta Club Scrapbook has placed first in the state for the second year in a row at the Mississippi Beta Club Convention. The scrapbook placed seventh in the nation last year.
The Scrapbook Committee is made up of Amanda Knowles, Kristen Gardner, Alicia Mills, Dinah Howell, Kery McDill, Casey Fitzgerald, Rita Caudill, Dana Massey, Olin Thomas, Charlene Foreman, Joseph Charlton, Allison Gressett, Mary Lois Thomas, Jennifer Carson, Blair Anderson and Kristal Burton.
The group will be competing at the national convention in June.
NEW ORLEANS Shana D. Parker, a 1995 highest honor graduate of Meridian Community College and former early admit student at Meridian Community College, has received a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Xavier University of Louisiana College, College of Pharmacy. Parker graduated summa cum laude.
She is the daughter of Curtis and Deborah Parker and the granddaughter of Bernice R. Pringle.
DECATUR Members of the Theta Chi Chapter of Phi Beta Lambda at East Central Community College have won the following honors at state competition held in Tupelo:
Asylbek Osmonov of Philadelphia, first place, accounting; Rebecca Bradshaw of Morton, first place, computer applications; Jenne White of Lake, third place, computer concepts; Rebecca Massengale and Kim Bracken, both of Chunky, second place, multimedia presentation; Brandi Harvey of Forest, fourth place, medical terminology; Terrence Williamson of Conehatta, third place, telecommunications; Eli Fulton, second place, information management and Ernie Brown, second place, multimedia presentation, both of Little Rock.
First and second place award winners will compete at the national Phi Beta Lambda Conference July 3-5 in Orlando, Fla.
The valedictorian of Southeast Lauderdale High School will serve as the 2001-2002 D.P. and Ruby Self Scholar at Meridian Community College. Julie Lowery has enrolled in MCC's University Transfer Program. As a recipient of the $1,000 scholarship, she plans to study law.
Amanda Gail Smith of Meridian will begin her freshman year at Meridian Community College as the 2001-2002 C.B. Bailey Scholar. The recipient of the $1,000 scholarship is a graduate of Meridian High School. She plans to study computer science.
Meridian Community College members of Phi Beta Lambda have won the following awards in state competition held in Jackson.
First place winners were: Torri Martin and Aaron Wilson, both of Meridian, desktop publishing; Scott Henley of Union, information management; Toby Embrey of Hickory, telecommunications.
Second place winners were: Doug Stevenson of Meridian, computer concepts; Angelia Harris of Waynesboro, human resource management; Greg Adams and Becky Wall, both of Meridian, Kathy Avera of Pachuta, Brenda Lee of Marion and Richard Oglesby of Collinsville, parliamentary procedure.
Third place winners were: Lori Dickens of Hickory, medical terminology; Dennis Jowhier of Meridian, networking concepts; Shelby Proaps of Collins-ville, public speaking.
Fourth place winners were: Trinna McLemore of Meridian, marketing.
The chapter received third place honors for its annual business report and fourth place recognition for the chapter Web site and participation in the March of Dimes fund-raiser.
Students in the Marketing Management Technology Program won the following awards at the state contest:
Second place: Scarlett Monsour, advertising campaign; Eva Vargas, entrepreneurship; Jennifer Worrell, advertising campaign, all of Meridian.
Third place: Adam Stockton, entrepreneurship; Ron Reid, sales representative, both of Meridian.
Fourth place: Chris Hamrick of Quitman, advertising campaign.
The group's scrapbook received fifth place honors.
