Knights have their way with Cougars

By By Jamey Lanier/Special to the Star

DECATUR If the West Lauderdale Knights are picking up where they left off last season, then certainly the same can be said of pitcher Todd Doolittle.
Doolittle fanned eight batters, including the first five he faced as the Knights took down Division 5-3A rival Newton County 16-1.
The Knights (5-0, 3-0 in Division 5-3A) dominated the hosts from the outset, staking themselves a 7-0 lead before the Cougars (4-4, 3-1 in 5-3A) could even get a base runner in the bottom of the third.
The Knights extended it to 10-0 in the fourth before hanging a six-spot in the fifth.
For the game, the Knights had 14 hits.
NCHS scored its lone run in the fifth.
Michael Holifield took the loss for the Cougars.
West got that big lead from batters like Ike Munn, who had a double and scored three runs.
Brad McKee was also key for the Knights, with a 3-for-4 effort that included a double, two RBIs and four runs scored.
Trent Posey also went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, four RBIs and three runs scored.
Other big hitters for the Knights were Bo Davis (2-for-3) and Ryan Clay (3-for-4).
Robbie Carey had a two-bagger for the Cougars, who travel to Kemper County for a game at 7 p.m. tonight. West Lauderdale will host Thomasville, Ala. today with the B team playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity playing at 7 p.m.
