The Mrs. Mississippi America Pageant is now accepting applications for the 2001 competition. The 25th annual pageant will be held on the Gulf Coast at the end of June. Categories of competition include Interview, Swimsuit (one-piece) and Evening gown.
Mrs. Mississippi State Pageant contestants must be U.S. citizens, Mississippi residents for at least six months, at least 18 years of age and married as of the date of entry to the state pageant. The winner will represent the state of Mississippi in Honolulu beginning Sept. 21 for a week-long vacation during the Mrs. America Pageant.

Army Pvt. Percy M. Gordon has graduated combat training at Fort Knox, Ky. During the training, he received instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map-reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid and Army history and traditions. He is the son of Percy Clark Jr. of Daleville and Juanita H. Gordon of Meridian.
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Otto C. Williams Jr. has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. During six weeks of training, he studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. He is the son of Otto Williams Sr. and Renee Williams of Meridian, and a 2000 graduate of Meridian High School.
Air National Guard 2nd Lt. Cynthia L. Sullivan has graduated from the joint specialized undergraduate pilot training school at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Okla., and has received an aeronautical rating of pilot in the military. The school is a 52-week, three-phase program for officers in the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard and air forces of several allied countries. Sullivan is the daughter of Henry B. and Peggy L. Sullivan of Meridian. She received a bachelor's degree from Delta State University in 1997.
Ronald McDonald made an appearance Wednesday at the Broadmoor McDonald's location, and presented a $500 check to the local Boy Scouts of America. McDonald's also sold Beanie babies for 99 cents, with proceeds going to the local chapter of Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts will use the donation to maintain their camping ground.
Ken Storms, president of the Meridian Area Navy League, received the Seven Seals Award on behalf of the Meridian Navy League from the Mississippi Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The award ceremony was held in Jackson. The ESGR Seven Seals Award is designed to recognize organizations and individuals who have demonstrated exceptional support of National Guard and Reserve Components.
The Red Cross provided tremendous services to the local victims of the tornadoes last December. In addition to large-scale disasters, the Red Cross assists people who are affected by disasters such as a single home fire. The Red Cross also trained nearly 4,000 people last year in water safety, HIV and AIDS education and CPR. The local chapter of the Red Cross encourages community members to become involved through volunteering and donations in March during Red Cross Awareness Month.
