Creighton's 15 strikeouts pace Quitman

The Quitman Panthers used a masterful pitching performance from Matt Creighton to defeat the host Wayne County War Eagles, 3-0 in Saturday's Wayne County Baseball Classic.
Creighton struck out 15 and overcame eight walks. The left-handed junior went the distance, allowing no War Eagle hits on a cold day in Waynesboro.
The Panthers helped out Creighton by scattering three runs on nine hits.
Quitman (2-0) crossed the plate in the second, fourth and seventh innings. Ty Lawson took the loss for Wayne (1-1), which committed three errors. Justin Doggett went 3-for-4 with a double and teammate Chris Fagan had a 3-for-3 day for the Panthers.
Wayne County 6, Greene County 3: The War Eagles came back from a 1-0 deficit and scored six unanswered runs to take the opening game of the tournament. Michael Palmer allowed three runs on three hits, while Greene County committed two errors.
Jade Roberts pitched the seventh for the save. Roberts also went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Robert West had a double and an RBI, as did Ty Lawson. Colby Heathcock had a 2-for-3 outing with an RBI, while Clark Henderson added an RBI single.
In the day's other games, it was Greene County taking Heidelberg, 8-3 and Quitman run-ruling the Oilers 23-0.
Wayne and Quitman will both take part in the Laurel Tournament on Thursday.
Union 6, Northeast Jones 5: The Yellow Jackets got a win in the Bay Springs Invitational Tournament. B.J. Norton pitched the seventh inning to take the victory. Wes Henry went 5 2/3 innings, striking out three for Union (1-1).
The two traded the same number of runs for the first five innings.
Justin Darby clocked a game-winning, two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh. Henry went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Raleigh 16, Union 11: There was no shortage of offense in this one, as Union actually outscored the Lions 10-5 through the first three innings, but couldn't hold the lead. Raleigh exploded for 11 runs through the final three frames.
Wayne Davis was the winning pitcher for the Lions, but Union hurt its cause with eight errors.
Eric Graham was saddled with the loss, while Darby went 2-for-4. The Yellow Jackets host McAdams on Monday.
Lake 5, Scott Central 2: In the Scott County Tournament, the Hornets pounded out three runs in the fifth inning to make up for three errors in getting the win.
Craig Morton got the victory by virtue of fanning nine Rebel batters in six innings of work.
Scott Central's Jonathan Sigrest took the loss.
Jason Massey went 2-for-3 for Lake, while Chase Barber had a 2-for-3 effort with a double.
Forest 8, Lake 7: The Bearcats held off the Hornets with help from a three-run fifth frame.
Forest also took the lead with four runs in the second. Drew Kenna struck out five batters for the win.
Lake lost despite pounding 12 hits. Eric Gunn got the negative decision on the hill as the first of three Hornet hurlers to take the mound.
Craig Martin went 3-for-4 with a double, Watkins had a pair of singles and Gunn was 2-for-2 with a two-bagger for the defending Class 1A state champion Hornets.
Lake travels to Philadelphia on Tuesday.
West Lauderdale at Neshoba Central postponed: West head coach Jerry Boatner didn't have a makeup date for this contest which was the season-opener for both teams as of Saturday night. The Knights, however, will travel to play Northeast Lauderdale on Tuesday. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
