Phi Delta Kappa scholarship, camp applications due soon

By Staff
Special to The Star
The local chapter of Phi Delta Kappa has announced the final call for area high school juniors and seniors to apply for scholarships and camp.
High school seniors considering a career in education, and who meet five other requirements, have until the end of January to complete a scholarship application. The local PDK chapter will select the top two applications to be sent to the international office in consideration for 47 grants.
Forty-four $1,000 grants, one $2,000 grant, one $4,000 grant and one $5,000 grant will be awarded worldwide. The scholarships are provided jointly by Phi Delta Kappa International and the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Foundation.
In addition to interest as a prospective educator, the five criteria used to select the scholarship recipients are: academic standing (high school counselor must submit transcript and class standing), an essay, two letters of recommendation, involvement in school activities and participation in community activities.
In addition, high school juniors who have a sincere interest in a teaching career are eligible to apply for the PDK 2001 Summer Camp/Institute for Prospective Teachers to be held this summer at Indiana University.
The camp is designed to introduce students to opportunities in education and the college application process, and provide an opportunity to meet students from diverse backgrounds, develop personal leadership skills and work with award-winning teachers.
Students should apply with the knowledge and signatures of their high school principals, guidance counselors and parents/guardians. A total of 140 students will be chosen to participate. Selections will be made on the basis of academic records, activities and honors and the response to "Why are you interested in a teaching career?" Complete program guidelines appear on the back of the application.
Campers will arrive on July 26 and depart Aug. 1. Students selected for the camp will pay a total of $155 for the one-week experience. This includes a $5 application fee and a $150 registration fee. The fees cover lodging, meals and instructional materials.
The Phi Delta Kappa Educational Foundation and Phi Delta Kappa International provide the cost of transportation.
Phi Delta Kappa is an international association of professional educators whose mission is to promote quality education, with particular emphasis on publicly supported education, as essential to the development and maintenance of a democratic way of life.
For additional information, call Dr. Judy Crowson, local PDK president, at 484-4978 or 693-1375.
