VFW, other volunteers take part in day of service

RUSSELLVILLE – Volunteers from the local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars members and others spent time Saturday cleaning up monuments in Russellville, as well as the streets of Phil Campbell, as part of a nationwide day of service.

Outgoing Commander Eric Reason said day of service is similar to “one massive charity event.”

“We open it up to the community as well to be part of it,” Reason said of the VFW’s national event. “It’s one of the ways that the VFW can engage with the community.”

Reason said members from several community groups came out to help.

“One team went out to Frog Pond Baptist Church and cleaned up their cemetery,” Reason said.

Incoming Commander Randy Mancell said working to make a difference in the community is what the VFW is about.

“Without the community and the veterans who are members of the VFW, we couldn’t do this,” Mancell said.

The next meeting of the Russellville post is May 22 at 7 p.m. in the old Russellville Library building.
