BTCPA revival run of ‘Moon Over Buffalo’ starts today

RED BAY — Mark Richardson estimates he has directed around 30 plays produced by the Bay Tree Council of the Performing Arts. He has acted in a few of them, but his involvement has been mostly on the directing side, as well as with other backstage and behind-the-scenes tasks.

The theater’s upcoming show, Ken Ludwig’s “Moon Over Buffalo,” is a return to familiar territory for Richardson. He directed the same play back in 2006.

“It’s a lot of fun, and it brings back some good memories,” he recalled. “All of Ludwig’s plays are fast-paced comedies. It’ll be a good time.”

“It’s so hard to believe it’s been 19 years,” Richardson said of the time that’s passed since the first production. “We’re having a lot of fun with it.”

The cast features only two members from the original performance — Scotty Kennedy as George Hay and Tina Smith as Charlotte Hay.

Kennedy describes the play as “a real crowd pleaser,” noting “it’s very funny” and that it was done on Broadway.

“We’ll be doing dinner theater Thursday through Sunday. As for the role, that’s probably one of my favorite roles and one of my favorite plays,” he said. “There’s a lot of action and slapstick; there’s just a lot that goes on in it. We had a great cast before, and we’ve got a great cast this time.”

Other cast members include Jeri Mayo, Morgan Miller, Austin Henderson, Lindley Boyd, Theron Struzik and Clint Sikes.

The shows take place in the Weatherford Centre in downtown Red Bay, located near the library.

The performance dates are Feb. 12-15 at 7 p.m. and Feb. 16 at 2 p.m.

Tickets went on sale Feb. 8 and can be purchased at the Weatherford Centre in Red Bay between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m. Tickets can be reserved by calling 256-356-9829.

Dinner theater is offered for this production but must be reserved and paid for in advance. Play tickets are $10 and the cost of dinner is $20, or $30 for both.
