Bobcats topple Wildcats in wild comeback win

The Phil Campbell Bobcats made a remarkable comeback to beat the Colbert Heights Wildcats 32-27, thus keeping their playoff hopes alive.

Trailing 27-24 with less than a minute remaining on the clock and staring at a do-or-die fourth-and-three from the Colbert Heights 20-yard line, quarterback Hayston Scott rolled right and dropped a perfect pass into the waiting arms of Logan Cooper at the goal line for the go ahead touchdown.

Phil Campbell’s defense put heavy pressure on the Colbert Heights offense in the final seconds of the game, stifling all hope from the Wildcats, and thus getting the win.

Hayden Wingo had his best game of the year at the right time. Wingo scored three touchdowns and converted four two-point conversions. He carried the ball 11 times for 121 yards. Seventy of those yards came on one long touchdown run early in the second half.

Colbert Heights jumped out to a 12-0 lead with a short touchdown run in the first quarter and a 76-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Phil Campbell went on the board after Mason Weeks recovered a Colbert Heights fumble deep in their own territory. Wingo made them pay, scoring from five yards out and converting the two-point conversion to cut the Wildcats’ lead to 12-8 with 1:35 to go in the first half.

Phil Campbell took their first lead of the game on the opening play of the second half. Wingo broke the Colbert Heights defenses and sprinted 70 yards for the touchdown. He also converted the two-point run to give the Bobcats a 16-12 lead.

The lead was short-lived. Colbert Heights took advantage of a Phil Campbell turnover, converting it to a touchdown to retake the lead 20-16.

Things seemed to go off the rails for the Bobcats late in the third and early in the fourth quarter. After a series of penalties, Colbert Heights picked off a Bobcat pass deep in Phil Campbell territory and returned if for a touchdown to take a 27-16 lead.

Phil Campbell got new life when Wingo scored on a 15-yard pass from Scott and converted the two-point run to cut Colbert Heights’ lead to 27-24, setting up the game-winning drive and score.

Phil Campbell hosts Clements for Homecoming Friday night.

In other county games, Red Bay lost to Tanner 46-14. Jaxon Vinson ran for 96 yards and a touchdown. Tharptown lost to Sheffield 46-29 and Vina lost to Meek 46-8.
