PCHS, RHS prepare for playoffs
This is the last week of region play as the 2021 football season winds down.
The play–off picture is pretty clear at this point. Russellville clinched a region championship with a win this past week at East Limestone; the Golden Tigers will host a first–round playoff game. Phil Campbell’s overtime win at East Lawrence locked up the second spot in the region and the right to host a first–round play–off game.
Red Bay, Tharptown, and Vina’s seasons will come to an end next week.
PCHS (5-3; 4-1) hosts Danville
With home field advantage in the playoffs secured, the Phil Campbell Bobcats will turn their attention to the Danville Hawks. The Bobcats beat the Hawks this past year 28-21. Phil Campbell is 4-1 all-time against Danville. The Hawks beat Elkmont 41-7 this past week, and Phil Campbell won an overtime thriller at East Lawrence 36-35.
RBHS (2-5; 2-3) hosts Colbert
Red Bay is playing for pride with the playoffs out of the picture for the first time since 2017. The Tigers are 8-8 all time against Colbert County and won the game this past year 30-14. The Indians are coming off two straight losses, to Mars Hill and Lexington. Red Bay is also coming off two straight losses, to Hatton and Mars Hill.
RHS (7-1; 5-0) hosts Lee
Russellville is the king of Class 5A Region 8 again and will close out region play with the Lee-Huntsville team they have beaten 12 out of 15 tries. Russellville won this past year 41-6. Lee is coming off three straight wins over Brewer, Lawrence County and Ardmore, while Russellville is coming off of two straight shutouts against teams that, at the time, were undefeated in region play – Ardmore and East Limestone.
THS (3-5; 0-5) hosts Mars Hill
Tharptown has had some tough region luck, and it will not be any better this week, as the Wildcats host the Mars Hill juggernaut. The Panthers’ only losses have come to schools far larger than they are in Class 6A, Cullman and Jasper. The Wildcats are coming off of two straight losses to Sheffield and Hatton. Mars Hill won this game this past year 77-0.
Vina (0-8; 0-6) hosts Phillips
(Homecoming)
To say the Red Devils have struggled this year would be an understatement. Riddled with injuries and numbers issues, Vina hasn’t had much of a chance. The Red Devils will host Phillips for homecoming Friday night. The Bears beat Shoals Christian this past week 59-0. Vina lost to Hackleburg 44-20.
