RB council conducts business
The Red Bay City Council held a rescheduled/special meeting June 27, with a work session at 4 p.m., and the council meeting was at 4:30 p.m.
In attendance at the meeting were Mayor Charlene Fancher and councilmembers Mike Kennedy, Herbert Trulove, Jason Vinson and Brad M. Bolton. Councilmember Jarod Massey was not present.
Chief of Police Janna Jackson spoke about the recent replacement of a wrecked Tahoe. New equipment has been ordered for it, and it will be about a month before it is on the road.
Parks and Recreation Director Dean Hubbard reported there was a ribbon cutting June 14 for the splash pad opening. After several days, it was already at maximum capacity.
Hubbard also said a youth volleyball league is starting at the end of July, and signup for that is underway.
A basketball court yet to be built is the only thing that hasn’t been completed as part of the grant Red Bay received for the fun park, Hubbard also reported. There are six months remaining to finish using the grant.
The council noted the Town of Vina’s approval of a resolution regarding its firing range – to allow the Red Bay Police Department to train there and to help them improve the range. The City of Red Bay will assist by providing additional law enforcement when the City of Red Bay’s Police Department is using the Town of Vina’s firing range or coming and going between the two. The City of Red Bay will patrol in the Town of Vina 30 minutes, two days per week.
The council discussed the Mississippi Department of Transportation letter received in response to the letter supporting funding for the MDOT SR76 Freight and Capacity Improvement Project under the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America Discretionary Grant Program.
The council also:
- Voted to approve new terms for Alan Bostick and Troy James on the Alabama Mississippi Railroad Authority; their current one-year terms expire July 7.
- Voted to approve new terms for Dr. Kristy Crandell and Pat Stamper on the City of Red Bay Zoning Board of Adjustment; their current three-year terms expire July 7.
- Discussed a resolution authorizing and approving application and matching funds for Large City Grant Funds through the State of Alabama’s CDBG Program.
- Considered and agreed to the opening of a checking fund for the City of Red Bay Youth Volleyball Program.
- Voted to reserve a table for eight for $2,500 at the Dempsey Foundation’s 2019 Project. The event will be held Aug. 8 to raise funds for Red Bay Hospital. The foundation project is focused on providing upgraded WellCare equipment for the WellCare Center at Red Bay Hospital.
- Approved Beth Hammock’s request for continued support in purchasing a full-page advertisement in the 2019 Distinguished Young Women Program. The cost is $250.
The July 1 regularly-scheduled meeting of the Red Bay City Council was canceled because of the holiday week and the anticipation of a lack of quorum. The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Red Bay City Council will be held July 15, with the work session at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7 p.m.
