Club Chronicles: DKG Alpha Upsilon receives Globe Award

Recently Alpha Upsilon members Gayle McAlister, Debbie Nale, Cheri McCain, Beverly Donaldson and myself attended the Delta Kappa Gamma Alabama State Convention in Huntsville.

This organization is a professional honor society for women educators with more than 70,000 members. DKG is an international organization established in 17 member countries around the world. The society defines its mission as promoting professional and person growth of women educators and excellence in education.

Cathy Daugherty, DKG International president, was one of the keynote speakers at the convention, and she also conducted workshops.

Another keynote address was given by Elizabeth Huntley, an accomplished litigation attorney. She supports child advocacy and is a leader in the movement to expand access to high quality Pre-K to all 4-year-olds in Alabama.

Liz has received several state and national awards for her work with children. She also serves as president and co-founder of The Hope Institute, which is an academy on the campus of Samford University.

Mrs. Huntley is a well-known author of the book, “More Than a Bird.”  In her book she referred to her first-grade teacher as Wonder Woman and spoke of the mentoring affects she had on her life. This Wonder Woman teacher was Pam Jones, the cousin of Gayle and Lanny McAlister.

The Alpha Upsilon Chapter received second place for the World Fellowship Globe Award, and first place was presented to the Rho Chapter.

Our members participated in a silent auction to raise money for the DKG International World Fellowship Scholarship Program. These scholarships are presented to women recipients from many countries who are seeking a master’s degree or doctorate and plan to return to their country to make a difference in our world.

At the close of the convention, a Ceremony of Remembrance was held to honor those women teachers who have passed. Our beloved DKG Alpha Upsilon member and past president, Sherry Davis, was recognized for her achievements at this ceremony.
