    Bobcats, Bulldogs see big action

Phil Campbell 67, Colbert Heights 46

Caitlynn Mills scored 24 points to help lead the Phil Campbell Bobcats past Colbert Heights for an easy 67-46 area win.

Phil Campbell led Colbert Heights 17-8 at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to 33-14. The Bobcats put the game on ice in the third quarter, taking a 50-24 lead into the fourth quarter.

Abby Davis followed Mills with 16 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Kallie Allen added 10 points. Kenner Scott scored eight points. Makalya Baker, Katie Thomas, Kaci Harris and Jade Roberson had two points each.

    Belgreen 68, Sheffield 27

Eleven players got in the scoring column as the Belgreen Bulldogs easily dismantled the Sheffield Jan. 21.

Belgreen jumped out to a 32-6 first-quarter lead and led Sheffield 43-7 at halftime.

Emma Dempsey led Belgreen with 15 points. Autumn Bragwell and Gracie Dempsey followed with 14 points and 12 points respectively. Katie Dempsey added seven points, and Emma Willingham had six points. Noella Willingham and Kaley Chandler scored three points each. Whitney Turbyfill, Megan Smith, Dulce Luna and Ansley Tate added two points each.

Phil Campbell 42, Red Bay 21

The Red Bay Tigers gave the Phil Campbell Bobcats a bit of a scare down the stretch in the Franklin County Tournament. The Bobcats were not about to let that happen again when the two faced off at Red Bay a few days later.

Phil Campbell’s defense was too much for the Tigers to overcome, as the Bobcats gradually put the game away 42-21.

Caitlynn Mills led Phil Campbell with 12 points. Kallie Allen added nine points, Katie Thomas eight points, Abby Davis five points, Kaci Harris three points, Kenner Scott three points and Olivia Taylor two points.

Destiny McCollister, Mallori Miller and Reagan Kuykendall had four points each for Red Bay, followed by Macy Faulkner with three points. Kylee James, Kaylee Markham and Lila Blackburn scored two points each.

Phil Campbell 44, Colbert County 15

The Phil Campbell Bobcats got off to a shaky start against Colbert County but held the Indians to three first-half points to begin a 44-15 route.

Phil Campbell scored four points in the first quarter off four Abby Davis free throws to outscore Colbert County 4-3. Davis and Katie Thomas combined for 15 of the Bobcats’ 19 second-quarter points, and Phil Campbell’s defense kept the Indians from scoring at all. The Bobcats led 23-3 at halftime.

Phil Campbell extended the lead to 40-9 at the end of the third quarter.

Phil Campbell 44, Belmont (Miss.) 39

The sixth-ranked Phil Campbell Bobcats avenged an earlier loss to the Belmont Cardinals, winning 44-39 last week. Kallie Allen led the Bobcats with 13 points.

Phil Campbell held a one-point advantage, 7-6, at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to 22-14 at the end of the first half. Phil Campbell held on to that eight-point lead in the third quarter, 33-25. Belmont outscored the Bobcats 14-11 in the fourth quarter, but the Bobcats held off the Cardinals’ late run.

    Belgreen 69, Brilliant 33

The Belgreen Bulldogs easily defeated the Brilliant Tigers 69-33 last week.

Belgreen raced out to a 21-8 first quarter lead and had the game well in hand by halftime, leading 41-10. The Bulldogs led 64-17 at the end of the third quarter.

    Vina 61, Shoals Christian 41

The Vina Red Devils defeated the Shoals Christian Flame 61-41 last week.

Vina led Shoals Christian 9-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Red Devils outscored the Flame 16-8 in the second quarter to take a 25-15 halftime lead and extended that lead to 45-28 in the third quarter.

Rayleigh Guin led Vina with 17 points – 13 of those in the second half. Emma Humphres followed with 14 points. Sarah Johnson added 10 points – all of which came in the second half. Sara Scott and Kaitlyn King contributed seven points each. Abbie Petree finished the game with four points, Hailey Cantrell three points and Kaitlyn Athey one point.

    Vina 65, Hubbertville 34

Guin scored 24 points to lead the Vina Red Devils past the Hubbertville Lions 65-34. Guin also had 10 assists and 10 steals, as the freshman dominated the Lions.

Vina led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead over Hubbertville to 26-13 at halftime. Vina led 49-22 at the end of the third quarter.

Guin scored 16 of her 24 points in the second half.

King added nine points. Johnson and Athey added eight points each. Emma Humphres scored seven points and got 10 rebounds. Sara Scott finished the game with six points, and Hailey Cantrell got three points.

Belmont (Miss.) 46, Red Bay 40

A fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell just short, as the Red Bay Tigers lost 46-40 to Belmont last week.

The rivals were tied 11-11 at the end of the first quarter, thanks to three three-pointers – two by Mallori Miller and one by Macy Faulkner. Miller and Cassidy Kuykendall scored the Tigers’ only two baskets in the second quarter as the Cardinals outscored Red Bay 18-4 to take a 29-15 halftime lead.

The Tigers’ scoring woes continued into the third quarter, as Reagan Kuykendall scored Red Bay’s only basket, allowing Belmont to extend the lead to 38-17. Faulkner got hot in the fourth quarter, scoring nine points; Red Bay outscored Belmont 23-8 in the fourth, but the Tigers fell six points short of the victory.

    Deshler 54, Red Bay 39

The Red Bay Tigers got off to a hot start but couldn’t hold on, falling to the Deshler Tigers 54-39.

Red Bay jumped out to a 15-12 first quarter lead, but Deshler came roaring back, outscoring Red Bay 15-7 in the second quarter to take a 27-22 halftime lead. Deshler extended that lead to 37-28 in the third quarter and pulled away in the fourth quarter for the win.
