Vina girls finish runner-up in holiday tournament

The Vina Red Devils finished runner-up in the Vina Holiday Tournament last week.

The Red Devils picked up a 56-29 win over Sheffield in the morning but lost to Colbert Heights in the afternoon finals, 70-43.

Vina led Sheffield 14-5 at the end of the first quarter, and the Red Devils increased their lead to 36-13 and cruised to the win in the second half.

Emma Humphres led Vina with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Rayleigh Guin added 15 points. Kaitlyn King (5), Sara Scott (8), Abbie Petree (6) and Kaitlyn Athey (4) also scored for Vina.

In the Colbert Heights game, Colbert Heights led Vina 19-9 at the end of the first quarter and pulled away in the second quarter to lead 33-13 at halftime.

Vina was led by King with 17 points, including five three pointers. Humphres added 11 points; Guin had eight points; Athey had four points; and Johnson finished with three points.

Vina girls crush Cherokee

The Vina Red Devil girls opened up a 20-0 lead over the Cherokee Indians and cruised to a 77-31 win Nov. 20.

Vina led Cherokee 23-2 at the end of the first quarter and increased the lead to 45-13 at halftime and 69-25 at the end of the third quarter.

Guin led the way for Vina with 23 points, 10 steals and eight assists. Scott finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Also scoring in double digits were Johnson with 11 points and King with 10 points.

Varsity boys

Cherokee outscored Vina 18-12 in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind 60-55 win Nov. 20.

Cherokee opened up a 15-11 first quarter lead, but Braden Moomaw and Timothy Newell combined for 14 of Vina’s 15 second-quarter points to help the Red Devils take a 26-25 halftime lead.

Vina extended that lead to 43-41 by the end of the third quarter before the eventual loss to the Indians.

Newell led the Red Devils with 18 points. Moomaw followed with 11 points. Haze Weatherford and Dawson Miller added 10 points each.
