Bobcats, Wildcats, Red Devils suffer lopsided losses

Lexington 35, Phil Campbell 12
Trey Leindecker scored two touchdowns for Phil Campbell, but it wasn’t nearly enough, as the Bobcats lost to the Lexington Golden Bears 35-12.
“We missed too many assignments and gave up too many big plays,” said Phil Campbell head coach Kevin Barnwell. “I thought we played well at times, but you just can’t give up that many big plays. All it takes is a missed assignment or a missed tackle, and pretty soon you are down a couple of touchdowns.
“We have got to get better and get those things corrected.”
Lexington jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter. Phil Campbell fought back late in the first quarter when Leindecker ran the ball into the end zone from nine yards out to put the Bobcats on the board 14-6.
Leindecker scored again early in the second quarter on a 10-yard run to bring Phil Campbell to within two points, 14-12.
The Golden Bears would go on to score 21 unanswered points the rest of the game to secure the win.
Phil Campbell (0-2) will travel to Clements next week. Clements is coached by former Phil Campbell coach Michael Parker.
Sheffield 49, Tharptown 0
The Tharptown Wildcats had no answer for the speed and athleticism of the Sheffield Bulldogs, losing 49-0 Friday night.
“We had a lot of disadvantages going into the game, but I am very proud of our guys for hanging in there and competing,” said Tharptown head coach Kevin Lacey. “We have to learn from our mistakes, and we need to focus on how some of these teams we face play and step up to that level.”
Sheffield put the game away quickly, leading 28-0 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs led 42-0 at halftime.
Tharptown (1-1) will host Colbert County Friday night.
Phillips 41, Vina 0
The Vina Red Devils couldn’t put any points on the board Friday night as they were overrun by the Phillips Bears.
“I thought our kids played hard,” said Vina coach Jason Harris. “We had a lot of missed opportunities in our passing game. Our offensive line got a little better blocking in our passing game. We’ve got to be more aggressive on defense and do a lot better job of tackling.”
Vina (0-3) will travel to Cherokee Friday night.
