FAME Girls Ranch hosts benefit dinner
Sept. 13 will be the annual golf tournament hosted by FAME Girls Ranch, being held in conjunction with a musical benefit Sept. 13-14.
The entertainment will feature Norbert Putnam and A Band of Legends. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. in The Mane Room at the ranch.
According to director of ranch life Cindy Hall, this is usually just a one-night event, but because of an increasing number of requests for tickets, organizers have opened it up to a second night. The guest list for these musical benefits generally consists of those who have attended prior events; so, Hall is encouraging anyone who loves music to get a ticket while they can so they will be on the list for future events.
“We never know what artists will come our way for the events. It’s always a God thing,” Hall said.
Norbert Putnam is a legendary artist in the Shoals and Nashville music scene. At 19 he was laying down bass lines for the first hit recording to come out of Muscle Shoals, “You Better Move On,” by Arthur Alexander. He was part of Rick Hall’s original Rhythm Section before moving to Nashville, where he worked with artists like Linda Ronstadt, The Monkeys, Elvis Presley and Jimmy Buffett.
Putnam became a producer and was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame “Nashville Cats.”
Putnam’s musical memoir, “Music Lessons Volume 1,” will be available for purchase at the event for $35, with 30 percent of the book sales going to benefit the work at FAME.
“People come to the ranch to heal, so it’s fitting that we use music to fund our work because music is a healer,” Hall said.
Other artists at the event will include Glen D. Hardin, James Burton, Randy McCormick, Andy Childs, Milton Sledge, The Holliday Sisters, Jim Spake and Wes Sheffield. They, including Putnam, will be performing classic hits and telling stories from those times that only they can tell.
“It’s going to be a fun night,” Hall said.
Dinner will be buffet style and catered by Red Clay Epicurean, and there will be wine selections by Melissa Bain.
Tickets are $160 each and are sold as tables of eight. The names of those without a party of eight people will be put on a waiting list until there are eight people to be placed at a table together.
