RHS volleyball snatches first win of season

By Brannon King / For the FCT

The 2018 varsity volleyball season is underway, and the Russellville Golden Tigers are looking for a good season under first-year head coach Whitney Glover.

Russellville hosted the Haleyville Lions Aug. 30 in a match at the RMS gym and then went to West Morgan for a tournament Saturday.

Thursday night, RHS jumped out to a good start by taking the first set by a 25-18 score. However, the Lions answered by taking the next three sets 25-14, 25-16 and 25-15 on their way to taking the match.

Treyvia Pruitt led Russellville with six kills, and Briana Ramirez had eight digs for the Golden Tigers.

“I’m really happy with their effort,” Glover said. “I think they played really hard, and we learned a lot from the first game. Now we can go into practice and start working on the things that we’re weak in.”

Saturday, RHS finished third in pool-play at the West Morgan tournament. For their first match of the day, the Lady Golden Tigers fell to Madison County 2-0. Madison County took set one 25-18 and then finished the sweep 25-20.

Krista Sikes had four assists for Russellville, and Josie Willis had three. Kaitleen Arzola had three kills and six digs, while Briana Ramirez had seven digs, and Briley Gillespie had six blocks.

Against West Morgan RHS again dropped two sets, this time falling 20-25 and 15-25. Ramirez had 16 digs while Arzola had 10 digs and seven kills. Sikes had 10 assists, and Willis added seven, while Lexie Glass had three blocks.

Russellville picked up its first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over East Lawrence to finish up the day. RHS outdid East Lawrence 25-15 and 25-16.

Willis had three assists and three digs; Sikes had four assists; Arzola added three kills and three digs; and Pruitt had four kills for RHS.
