Lady Golden Tigers Softball Camp teaches game fundamentals

Young athletes recently had the opportunity to take part in the annual Lady Golden Tigers Softball Camp at the Russellville High School softball complex.

RHS head coach Kathryn Montgomery, her coaching staff and even a few current Russellville players showed the girls some of the drills and tips necessary to play the game the correct way – all in a fun atmosphere.

The camp was held July 10 and was open to children in first through sixth grade. For $35 the campers were able to learn about the basic skills needed to play, including throwing, fielding, batting, base running and sliding/diving, along with pitching and catching.

Montgomery said the camp had about 15 attendees, with many of them coming from Russellville.

Ball players did not let the hot weather or a rain shower keep them from enjoying the camp.

“We had some sign up early, and we had some come during registration, which is perfectly fine. We were glad to see them and glad to have them here,” Montgomery said. “We like to start early, especially with our kids around here, because it builds our base a lot. Foundation and basics are really important in any sport, and that’s no different in softball.

“We had a lot of fun,” Montgomery added. “It was hot, and we got rained on a little bit early, so we kind of flip-flopped our schedule and went into our amazing facility and hit first. Then, we came out and did some defense and some pitching and catching, and then we had a little fun at the end with some water balloons and a slip-n-slide.”
