Hi folks,
In the past few weeks a lot of political signs have been appearing throughout our county. That is good because everyone wants to know that we all have an important part to play in the election process.
I read with interest an article that appeared in the Franklin County Times about the late Carl Elliott. Mr. Elliott served the county when he was in the United States Congress – an office that he held for many years. As he was from Northwest Alabama, the Vina community, I believe he tried to help the people in this part of the country.
He had a great working relationship with President John F. Kennedy, and that really made a great difference.
If a person is going to help anyone, surely it would be the people from his or her home community.
Franklin County can also boast about a movie star from Rockwood, Miss Lillie Gentle – later known as Lili Gentle. She starred in several movies, one being “Carousel.” I remember very well how people lined up to get a ticket to see the movie when it was at the Roxy Theater here in Russellville.
Lillie had a sister whose name was Janet who spent many, many years in an Iron Lung because of the dreaded disease of polio. Janet always had a big smile and was always happy when people come pay a visit at the Gentle home in Rockwood.
Later this family moved to Birmingham. Janet passed away after many years in the Iron Lung. She is buried in California. I have a picture of the cemetery and a picture of the grave.
Who knows what young boy or girl from our county will one day make a difference in the lives of so many people?
It’s hard sometimes to accept change in our life, but change is necessary many times in order for progress to play a major part in our lives.
It’s with sadness in our hearts we now think of the passing of a great citizen. This past week we learned of the death of Mr. Bud Burfield. Mr. Burfield was such a great person, and I am sure he touched the lives of many people. The Burfield family is well known throughout our county, and we really hate to learn of the passing of a man who always tried so hard to be a good neighbor, a great friend and a wonderful citizen.
Our condolences go out to every member of the Burfield family. It’s wonderful to have good memories of good people, and certainly Bud Burfield had all the great traits that make for a good person.
