Vina’s Hester signs with BMC

Abby Hester’s love for the game of basketball started when she was 4 years old. It carried her through 1,676 career points and 1,103 career assists. Now, she is taking that talent and love to the next level.

Feb. 5 Hester signed a basketball contract with Blue Mountain College in Mississippi.

Her teammates, coach/father Richie Hester and other family members gathered around in Vina’s gymnasium to support her during this momentous occasion.

“There is no doubt Abby has the athletic ability, the speed, the quickness, but most of all, her success has come from her heart and her love for the game,” coach Richie Hester said.

Abby said she discovered her love for athletics in little league and knew then she would one day pursue either softball or basketball in college.

“I was 4 when I had my first basketball game, and the other team (Tuscumbia) didn’t show up to play. My dad said he had never seen a little girl so upset. So I guess you could say my ‘love for the game’ started quite some time ago,” Abby said.

Abby said that she feels at home at BMC because of the great people and smaller size of the program.

“Off the court and field, she puts God first. Abby is always putting others first – family or friends. I am very proud of her athletic accomplishments, but most of all I am proud to call her my daughter,” Richie said.

For this season, Abby had 351 assists placing her second on the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s record; 161 steals, 20th); and 198 free throws (19th).

In her career she tallied 1,103 assists (3rd) and 613 steals (6th).
