1A, Area 13 Boys Quarterfinals: Phillips 86, Vina 62

The Vina Red Devils season came to an end Monday night with an 86-62 loss to Phillips in the quarterfinals of the 1A, Area 13 tournament.

Phillips advances to take on the top-seeded Belgreen Bulldogs Thursday night.

Timothy Newell and Zarek Barnett both scored in excess of 20 points for Vina, but it was not enough to help their team advance to the semifinals.

Forty-seven points were scored in the first quarter alone of this high-scoring game. Vina held a 26-21 lead at the end of the first period of play.

The Red Devils, however, couldn’t sustain the scoring momentum, while the Bears continued to roll. Phillips outscored Vina in the second quarter 22-9 to take a 43-35 halftime lead. The Bears extended their lead to 70-54 at the end of the third period and outscored the Red Devils 16-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Newell led Vina with 24 points. Barnett followed with 20 points. Austin Harper added seven points, Jackson Landers five points, Blake Hardin three points and Ethan Colvin three points.

Tharptown will also play Hackleburg at Belgreen Thursday night in semifinal action.
