RHS presents ‘Shrek’ musical

Audiences can expect a music-filled, character-focused production from the Russellville High School music theater program this spring. The school’s production of “Shrek the Musical,” adapted from the Broadway musical version, will hit the stage Feb. 8-9.

Shows will start both nights at 6:30 p.m. and will last for about an hour, according to Patrice Smith and Emily Rush, directors. Admission will be $5, and tickets can be pre-purchased at the Russellville Middle School office or at the RHS auditorium each night.

This is a slightly different type of production for the program, according to Rush, because it contains a lot of comedy.

“It actually makes it easier and more fun because we’re able to be dramatic and a little crazy,” said Destiny Cooper, a senior who has a main role in the production.

Students have been practicing since the first day of school for this production, which Smith calls “ambitious” and “more modern feeling” than some of their previous productions. She said the main focus is more on the actors and actresses and the songs, rather than the set or setting.

“It delves deeper into the subject matter of being yourself and being unique,” Smith explained.

Even though it might be an ambitious show, Smith and Rush said they are confident the students can handle it.

“They always rise to our expectations and even above that, whether it’s vocals or choreography,” Rush said.

Music Theatre International which produces the scripts, writes productions specifically for high schools. Smith said the company does a good job of making sure the language and subject matter is family-friendly.

“We try to stay true to our program and to ourselves and maintain that wholesome family element,” Smith said.

The student-actors agreed audiences can look forward to experiencing a more detailed version of the Shrek story than the movie version.
