Big fourth quarter lifts Red Bay girls

By Bart Moss / For the FCT

Reagan Kuykendall and Carlie Lindley combined for 16 points in a 22-point fourth quarter to lead the Red Bay Tigers in a come-from-behind victory over the Lamar County Bulldogs 58-51. The win secures the Tigers a No. 2 seed in the area tournament, which will be held at Phil Campbell in early February.

Red Bay trailed the entire game until the fourth quarter. Lamar County jumped out to an 18-10 first quarter lead. The Tigers clawed their way back in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 17-13 to cut the lead to 31-27 at halftime.

Lamar County extended their lead to 46-36 going into the fourth quarter before the Tigers roared back to get the win.

Destiny McCollister led Red Bay with 16 points. Kuykendall added 14 points – seven of which came in the fourth quarter. Lindley added 13 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter. Mallori Miller finished with five points, Brooke Shewbart with three points, Savannah Shaw three points and Macy Faulkner two points.

Varsity boys: Lamar County 55, Red Bay 49

The Red Bay Tigers mounted a big fourth-quarter comeback attempt at Lamar County last week, but the hole they had dug themselves was just too deep, as they lost 55-49.

“I think we struggled with the pressure of the moment,” said Red Bay coach Jon Torisky. “We are a young team, and we haven’t been in a position to host an area tournament in a long time. I think that fact, plus Lamar County played a really good game, hurt us.

“It was in our hands; now it is not. Hopefully we’ve got the jitters out of system and things go our way down the stretch.”

The Tigers were undefeated and controlled their own destiny in their area coming out of the Christmas break, but two losses to Sulligent and Lamar County changed all of that. Now Red Bay might be at the mercy of the coin flip to determine area seeding and the host team.

Red Bay hit a big scoring slump against the Bulldogs. The Tigers scored more points in the fourth quarter than they did in the first three quarters of the game combined. Red Bay scored only 13 points in the first half and just 22 points through the third quarter. The Tigers scored 27 points in the fourth quarter attempting the comeback.

Red Bay hit five three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Three players – Clay Allison, Colton Corum and Braden Ray – scored all of their points in the fourth quarter.

Peyton Green led Red Bay with 13 points. Gath Weatherford followed with 12 points. Allison added 10 points. Corum finished with eight points, Ray with three points, Hunter Bays with two points and Tanner Hamilton with one point.
