Franklin County Tournament begins next week
By Bart Moss / For the FCT
The varsity Franklin County Tournament will tip off Jan. 16 at Belgreen High School. Games will be played Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Admission is $5 per night.
Based on previous matchups and the tournament brackets, the favorites to get to the finals in the girls division look to be Phil Campbell and Belgreen, with the Bobcats having a big edge to win the championship for the first time in more than two decades.
In the boys division, things could get interesting. Belgreen and Red Bay appear to have the edge to make the finals, with Belgreen being the favorite to win the championship because the game is on their home court. Belgreen and Red Bay opened the season against each other with the Bulldogs having to come from behind to win a tight game. Red Bay has been playing as well as anyone through the middle of the season, but the Tigers have slipped a bit in the past couple of games.
Tharptown and Phil Campbell have both played Red Bay well, so an upset wouldn’t be surprising in the boys division.
