Practice safety with space heaters

Russellville fire marshal Justin Green is sharing some fire safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association for everyone to keep in mind.

When it comes to keeping a space warm, space heaters are an oft-used solution.  According to the NFPA, nearly half of all space heater fires involve electric space heaters. However, these small appliances can pose a number of hazards, and Green noted these warnings:

  • Purchase space heaters tested by a qualified testing laboratory.
  • Keep heater at least three feet away from anything that can burn.
  • Choose a heater with a thermostat and overheat protection, and place heaters on a solid and flat surface.
  • Make sure heater has auto shut-off in case it tips over.
  • Never block an exit, and keep heaters away from foot traffic.
  • Keep children away from heaters.
  • Don’t use an extension cord with heaters.
  • Turn off and unplug heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.

The RFD will share additional seasonal safety tips in the coming weeks.
