Bible study camp hosts students from across Southeast

Preacher, teachers and others so inclined gathered Monday at Rustic Youth Camp in Russellville for a week-long learning experience titled “Profitable for Teaching Camp.”

Stephen Russell, 38, is an evangelist in Limestone County and the organizer of this particular camp that is held once a year now for about four years.

“I wanted to provide an experience like this for guys my age,” Russell said.

The Rustic Youth Camp holds a similar camp over the summer for high school boys, where Russell is a counselor.

Six speakers will be present at the weeklong camp, leading the lectures each day and hosting a question and answer panel every evening, Russell explained. Speakers are Ed Bragwell, L.A. Stauffer, Doy Moyer, Wes Brown, Harold Carswell and Russell himself.

“I reached out through my contacts and tried to pick people that I know have a passion for their work and an expertise in some area,” he said.

Russell worked with the other five speakers on the topics that they will each be speaking on, which include “Teaching About Preaching the Gospel Through the Decades,” “Teaching About Logic and the Bible,” “Teaching from Isaiah,” “Teaching About Race and the Bible” and “Teaching About Calvinism.”

Russell said about 15-20 students will be staying overnight at the camp.

“We have students from all over Alabama and the surrounding states, but they’re serious participants. They have to be, to learn for eight to 10 hours a day,” he said.
