Phil Campbell, Vina suffer homecoming losses

By Bart Moss / For the FCT

Homecoming presented a tough challenge on the gridiron for two Franklin County teams last week, as the Phil Campbell Bobcats and Vina Red Devils both fell to the competition on home turf.

Sulligent 35, Phil Campbell 6

Phil Campbell couldn’t overcome a talented Sulligent team Friday night, as the Bobcats fell to the Blue Devils 35-6 on Homecoming.

The Bobcats’ lone score came late in the game on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Peyton Thomas to Ben Williams.

The Bobcat defense held the Blue Devils at bay in the first half, trailing just 13-0 at halftime. The offense, however, couldn’t put the ball into the endzone. Sulligent did a good job stopping the Phil Campbell run game, holding the Bobcats to just two yards rushing.

Thomas completed 29 of 38 passes for 180 yards and the touchdown to Williams.

The Bobcats fall to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in region play.

Phil Campbell will travel to Phillips Friday night.

Cherokee 35, Vina 0

Cherokee’s speed and athleticism was just too much for Vina to contend with Friday night. The Red Devils fell to the Indians 35-0 on Homecoming night.

Cherokee raced out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and had extended their lead to 35-0 by halftime.

Vina falls to 0-4 on the season and 0-3 in region play. The Red Devils will host Meek Friday night.

Carlan McNeill was crowned Vina’s 2017 Homecoming Queen at halftime.
