In search of new hobbies
One thing that can make for a truly fascinating magazine or newspaper feature is talking with people about their hobbies. Whether it’s a more common hobby or something unique or unusual, it’s always interesting to learn more about the activities that make people tick – fishing, crochet, woodcarving, jewelry-making, rock climbing, archery … It would seem the options are practically limitless. I always enjoy chatting with people about their passions, the things they love to pursue in their precious free time.
I shudder to think, however, what we might talk about if the tables were turned – if someone were to interview me about my hobbies.
My spare time seems to be taken up with washing dishes, doing laundry, grocery shopping and making lists. Yes, if pressed I would say my primary hobby is list-making.
Trust me, I know how sad that is.
Other than list-making, I tend to occupy my time with reading and listening to podcasts. It’s not that these aren’t enjoyable or worthwhile hobbies – they are – but they sometimes feel like flimsy ways to fill the day, compared to what others are involved in. I have friends who play disc golf, who take pilot lessons, who build computers, who are learning sign language.
Somehow, listening podcasts seems a little weak in comparison.
So let’s think of this as an advice column in reverse. Instead of taking questions and answering them with pearls of wisdom, I’m asking the question and waiting to hear from you, dear readers. What’s your favorite hobby? I could use some ideas. Tell me all about your passion, what makes you tick – I might even share your thoughts in a future piece on the editorial page.
