EFJHS plans basketball camp

Young future basketball stars who want to learn from one of the best will get that chance in June.

East Franklin Junior High School coach Dalana Baker said having Coach Donnie Roberts host another fundamentals camp for elementary through junior high students was an obvious choice. “Not only did he have a winning career, but he was also inducted into the AHSAA Hall of Fame,” Baker pointed out. “Although we were enemies for the years that I played against him, I have always respected him as a great coach, and now that we are not playing against each other, we are allies.”

The fundamentals camp will be offered at Cornerstone Church Gym on Highway 243 June 26-29.

“I like hosting a basketball camp for young players because I think it is important for them to learn the correct fundaments at an early age and have a good foundation to build on,” said Baker, who will begin her seventh year as head coach, and her tenth on the coaching staff at EFJHS, in the coming season. “We had about 25 girls last year, but we opened the camp up to boys this year, so we are expecting even more this year.”

The camp is open to boys and girls in rising third through ninth grade. Cost is $50 per camper, which includes a T-shirt if paid by the June 12 deadline. “They can still register on the first day of camp but will not get a shirt,” Baker explained. “We do the shirts as incentive to register early so we will know how many to prepare for. The shirts have to be pre-ordered.”

Camp will cater to two age groups: rising grades three through six (8-11 a.m.) and rising grades seven through nine (noon to 3 p.m.).

Registration form information should include name, phone number, grade (for the fall), date of birth, emergency contact and phone number and T-shirt size (Youth S through Adult XL). Forms and $50 check can be mailed to Dalana Baker, 3686 Highway 75, Phil Campbell, AL 35581.

For more information call Roberts at 256-627-8570 or Baker at 256-324-0370.
