Bobcats triumph in spring football game

The Phil Campbell Bobcats wrapped up a strong spring practice session with a win. The Bobcats beat Winston County 14-6 in the recent spring game.
Phil Campbell got two long, sustained drives from an offense that lost most of its skill position players to graduation or injury. The exception comes at the quarterback position, with Peyton Thomas returning as the team’s leader and signal caller.
Thomas accounted for both the Bobcats touchdowns with a 31-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Baker and 1-yard run for a touchdown.
“I was really pleased with the way our team played in the game,” said Bobcat coach Ryan Swinney. “We lost a lot of skill position players. Peyton is a leader and, along with Brodie Nix and Seth Brindley, will be expected to take on leadership roles.
“We had some new guys step and make some plays,” Swinney added.
Despite his general satisfaction with his Bobcats’ performance, Swinney definitely said he sees areas of focus for improvement. “We made some mistakes that are usually going to happen in the spring. We also gave up too many big plays that we shouldn’t have.
“We lost 12 seniors, so we have some young guys working hard to find a position to play.”
Phil Campbell will open the 2017 season with county rival Tharptown.
