The Russellville Golden Tigers came into Thursday’s play at Montgomery’s Riverwalk Stadium knowing that they needed to win only one of two possible games to claim their third-straight Class 5A baseball state championship and they did just that. The Golden Tigers defeated the Faith Academy Rams for the second year in a row to claim the title and took the series clincher by a 7-4 score.
RHS won game one of the best-of-three series on Wednesday night behind the strong pitching of Cody Greenhill by a 9-1 advantage. The first game of the day on Thursday went the way of Faith by an 8-7 score when the Rams scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning after Russellville had taken the lead in the bottom of the sixth.
The Golden Tigers (38-10) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the final game and held on to start the championship celebration on the field and in the stands. Skylar Holland got the win on the mound by going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 5 hits. Russellville RBIs in the deciding game came from Houston Kitterman, Landon Ezzell and Greenhill who had 2 apiece and Tom Barkley Scott drove in one. Greenhill was voted MVP after the conclusion of the series by the media.
