Spruce Pine native earns top collegiate award

Nicole Sumerel of Spruce Pine has been recognized by Itawamba Community College (Fulton, Miss.) as a top scholar as the recipient of the Forestry Technology award during an Evening of Celebration: Honoring Academic Excellence across the Curriculum, April 18, in the W.O. Benjamin Fine Arts Center auditorium at the Fulton Campus.

A forestry major, Sumerel is a Diamond Girl and member of the Forestry Club. Her honors include selection as a member of ICC’s prestigious Hall of Fame for 2016-17, Positively ICC and Dean’s List scholar. She will graduate with her Associate of Applied Science degree in Forestry Management Technology and will deliver the benediction at the 3 p.m., May 13 commencement ceremony.

She is the daughter of Michael Sumerel of Spruce Pine.
