Vina celebrates literacy with Reading Fair

In conjunction with Read Across America Week, Vina students got the chance to participate in a first-of-its-kind program: the Vina Reading Fair.

Literacy coach Paula Jackson said 90 students in 1st through 9th grade participated in the reading fair, with additional special participation from Pre-K students.

“The students got to read their favorite book, decorate a board and dress up like the main character that represented their chosen book,” Jackson explained. “Some of things that were included on their boards were the story elements, such as the main characters, theme, plot, problem and solution of the story.”

Winners in Division 2 were: Grand Prize – Kenzlee Bohannon (5th grade), “Beauty and the Beast;” Gold – Leah Dabbs and Maddie Mills (6th Grade), “Sisters;” Silver – (not pictured) Connor Dowdy (5th grade), “Diary of a Wimpy Kid Hard Luck;” Bronze – Summer Harrison (4th grade), “Crime Biters.”

Winners were selected from each of three divisions for students with the best participation.

In Pre-K, Shea Miller’s students set up a multi-sensory board about the story of “The Three Little Pigs.”

Read Across America Week included many other special activities, like a balloon release. Students attached messages to their balloons – and one received a response back.

Winners in Division 3 were: Grand Prize – Jayla Pucket (9th grade), “The Mortal Instruments City of Bones;” Gold – Rayleigh Guin (7th grade), “Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules;” Silver – Cayden Lawler (7th grade) and Cai Lawler (4th grade), “Where the Red Fern Grows.”

“Dear Zach,” the note, dated March 3, reads. “I am an employee at Barnsley Gardens Resort. Today while working with my other crew members on the Golf Course, we found your tag attached to the balloon. Your balloon was found at Hole 9. Barnsley Gardens is located in Adairsville, Georgia. It is located 210 miles and is 3 hours and 59 minutes away from Vina. We were very excited to be able to write you and let you known how far your balloon traveled!!!”

Guest readers for the special week included Superintendent Greg Hamilton, Stephanie Humphries, VHS junior Trae Dill, school nurse Karen Blevins, counselor Sharon Sparks, Principal James Pharr and science teacher Jamie Payne.

Jackson extended her thanks to all who were involved in the reading fair and other activities, and particularly “all the parents who came out to support the Vina Reading Fair.”
