Bobcats sweep junior high tourney

The Phil Campbell Bobcats laid claim to the junior high Franklin County championship last week in both softball and baseball. The Bobcat softball team won three games, rather easily defeating Belgreen 16-3 and East Franklin 14-0 and 16-1. The Bobcats baseball team defeated Red Bay 16-0 in the finals of the baseball county tournament.
This year’s tournament was held at Vina High School.
The varsity tournaments will be later in the season.
Following is a summary of all games reported:
Softball
In game one of the tournament, Phil Campbell defeated Belgreen 16-3. Emma Ergle got the win, allowing only two hits and striking out eight batters. Brittney Roberson doubled twice and scored three runs. Harley Cummings doubled once and scored two runs. Mackenzie Scott went four for four. Emma Ergle double once.
In game two, Phil Campbell blanked East Franklin 14-0. Emma Ergle pitched a no-hitter and struck out six batters. Devan Stewart had two RBIs and scored three runs. Mackenzie Scott doubled three times and scored two runs. Autumn Roberson doubled two times and scored two runs. Rachel Hutcheson had three singles and scored two runs. Emily Duncan doubled and scored two runs. Harley Cummings had two RBIs and scored two runs.
In the championship game, Phil Campbell again easily defeated East Franklin 16-1. Emily Ergle allowed only two hits and struck out five batters. Jade Roberson doubled twice, singled twice and scored three runs. Brittany Roberson singled twice and scored two runs. Mackenzie Scott doubled twice, singled and scored three runs. Harley Cummings tripled, had two RBIs and scored a run. Devan Stewart singled and scored a run. Autumn Roberson singled and had an RBI. Rachel Hutcheson singled twice and scored two runs. Emily Duncan doubled, had an RBI and scored two runs.
“The girls played great throughout the whole tournament,” said Phil Campbell Coach Doug Jackson. “Adversity never phases them. They worked hard all season for this, and it turned out in their favor. This team only lost once this season. We are looking forward to a great future with these girls.”
Baseball
The Phil Campbell baseball team took advantage of nine Red Bay errors to roll past the Tigers 16-0 to win the tournament.
The Bobcats scored 14 runs in the first inning alone, leaving no doubt as to the outcome. Phil Campbell added their other two runs in the second inning while leaving two runners on base.
Austen Baker was the winning pitcher, allowing only one hit and striking out six. Baker also scored three runs to help his cause.
Brett Saint had two singles and a double and scored two runs. Rilan Garrison had a single and scored two runs. Levi Crittenden had a single and scored two runs. Trey Liendecker, Mason Swinney and Jonah Fisher scored two runs each. Luke Garrison scored one run for the Bobcats.
“I am really proud of these guys,” said Phil Campbell Coach Darby Allison. “We took advantage of some of their miscues. We ran the bases well and made the most of our hits.”
