RFD offers free smoke alarms

When it comes to smoke alarms, the Russellville Fire Department is a passionate advocate, always sharing about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home. The department has always gone further than just talking about the importance, offering their time to come ensure alarms are installed properly. In yet another effort to protect the community, the RFD is offering free smoke alarms to families that qualify.

“A working smoke alarm reduces the chances of dying in a house fire by 50 percent,” explained Russellville fire marshal Justin Green. This is the driving force behind the Russellville Fire Department’s S.A.F.R.R Program – Smoke Alarms For Russellville Residents. “If you live inside the city limits of Russellville and meet one of the requirements, you qualify for a smoke alarm free of charge.”

Requirements include:

  • live in a single-family home or mobile home
  • 60 years of age or older, handicapped or on a fixed income.

“This program is designed to provide smoke alarms to those in need to ensure these individuals are alerted in the event of a fire,” Green said. “As a part of the program, we will also evaluate the location of the current alarms located within the residence.”

Smoke alarms will be distributed on a first come, first served basis because of the limited availability.

Applications may be picked up and dropped off at Station 1 on South Jackson Avenue. Applications can also be mailed to Russellville Fire Department/SAFRR Program, P.O. Box 1000, Russellville, AL 35653. For more information call 256-332-8760 ext. 6.
