Phil Campbell picks up shutout wins

By Bart Moss for the FCT

The Phil Campbell Bobcats picked up a couple of shutout wins last week over the Winston County Yellow Jackets and the Winfield Pirates. The Bobcats also lost a nailbiter to the Haleyville Lions in some very cold weather earlier last week.

Phil Campbell 14, Winston County 0

The Phil Campbell Bobcats scored 11 runs in the first two innings as they easily defeated the Winston County Yellow Jackets 14-0. The Bobcats scored their 14 runs on just eight hits but got a little help from the Yellow Jackets, who struggled in the field with seven errors.

Phil Campbell scored four runs in the top of the first inning when Hayden Copeland scored on an error by the Winston County pitcher. Brodie Nix and Gage Roberson scored on a single by Nick Swinney, who later scored stealing home.

The Bobcats picked up seven more runs in the top of the second inning. Daniel Smith, Copeland, Nix, Peyton Thomas, Roberson, Swinney and Colby Baker all crossed the plate to give the Bobcats an 11-0 lead.

Joe Hardy led the Bobcats at the plate, going two for four with two RBIs and a run scored. Swinney picked up four RBIs on the night. Copeland, Nix, Roberson, Swinney and Baker all scored two runs each.

Phil Campbell 2, Winfield 0

Peyton Thomas pitched a two-hit shutout to help the Bobcats to a 2-0 win over the Winfield Pirates.

Thomas went the full seven innings, striking out ten batters.

The game was scoreless until the third inning, when Thomas helped himself with a line drive single scoring Swinney to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

Phil Campbell scored again in the top of the fourth inning when Nix scored on a bloop pop fly over the second baseman by Hardy to make it 2-0.

That is all the Bobcats would need as Thomas mowed down Pirates one by one at the plate.

Nix led the way for Phil Campbell at the plate, going three for three and scoring a run.

Haleyville 9, Phil Campbell 5

The Phil Campbell Bobcats and the Haleyville Lions played a tight game on frigid evening March 14. With temperatures hovering at the freezing mark, both teams kept warm swing the bats. Haleyville had nine hits to Phil Campbell’s seven hits. The Lions scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away from the Bobcats and get the win.

Phil Campbell took an early lead in the top of the first inning when Copeland scored on an error by the Haleyville catcher. The Bobcats extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning when Nix scored on a single by Taylor.

Haleyville tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning.

Phil Campbell retook the lead in the top of the third inning 4-2. Mike Wrona scored on a single by Nix, and Thomas scored on an RBI single by Swinney.

Haleyville cut Phil Campbell’s lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the third inning and then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth innings.

The Lions exploded for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away.

Nix went two for three at the plate with one RBI and scoring one run. Copeland also had two hits in the game.
