Pre-K students learn healthy teeth rules

Through storytime and a few fun visual aids, dentist Dr. Brett Bowen, encourages Pre-K children to care for their teeth, as part of Dental Health Month.

Flossing, brushing and healthy snacks – important topics Dr. Brett Bowen tried to drive home to Pre-K students at West Elementary School for Dental Health Month.

Bowen, a Russellville dentist, delighted the 4-5-year-olds with tales of plaque and cavities, particularly emphasizing the good habits of brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, visiting the dentist twice a year and choosing healthy snacks – like fruit and low-fat cheese – over unhealthy snacks – like potato chips and chocolate.

“We feel like it’s our job to get out into the community and teach the little ones what they need to do to take good care of their teeth,” Bowen said. “We see early childhood decay being so rampant with neglect and not having the proper education. These values need to be instilled at such a young age. If we instill good habits and they make good decisions while they’re young, it will last a lifetime.”

Pre-registration for WES Pre-K will continue throughout the month of March, with the lottery drawing set for April 3 at 8:30 a.m. Children must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1. For more information call 256-331-2122.
