One hundred thirty-two days. That’s the length of time remaining between now and the Fourth of July. But for the City of Russellville to pull off its annual Jam on Sloss Lake spectacular, there’s no time to lose.

The city Monday voted to again contract with Alabama Pyrotechnics to provide the fireworks show for Russellville’s Independence Day celebration. Councilman Gary Cummings was once again appointed to handle all details and logistics of the celebration, a responsibility he said he thoroughly enjoys each year.

The city will pay $12,500 for this year’s pyrotechnic display – a $2,500 increase over last year. Cummings said the city is determined to get the biggest bang for their buck – in this context, quite literally. “It’s a good fireworks show,” he said. “It’s unbelievable. Highway 24 basically shuts down during it.”

Cummings said he plans to quickly begin working to line up this year’s musical entertainment, including big local names like the KGB and Rewind as well as another big-name headliner, like last year’s John Anderson.

New this year, the Russellville City Council plans to allow interested vendors to set up and sell items at the Jam. Food vendors are already lined up, but vendors will be permitted to sell merchandise. Vendors must purchase booth space. For more information, call city hall at 256-332-6060.
