One charged with attempted murder

Following a shooting on McCarley Road in Phil Campbell Feb. 7, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has charged John James Common, 33, of Russellville, with attempt to commit murder.

According to the FCSO, Common allegedly shot into a house on McCarley Road. Two people were present inside the home, and Common, along with two accomplices, was reportedly captured on the home’s security camera.

Authorities reported that Common was identified from the security footage and later arrested and charged during a traffic stop on Filmore Street in Russellville. In addition to attempted murder and discharge of a firearm into an occupied building charges, Common was also charged with trafficking cocaine, synthetic marijuana hydrocodone as well possession of marijuana first degree and possession of drug paraphernalia first degree. About 60 grams of crack cocaine and 60 grams of synthetic marijuana as well as meth, hydrocodone and other pills were found in his possession, according to the FCSO.

Common is being held in the Franklin County Jail on a $350K bond, plus probation revocation from a previous charge.

The FCSO is still seeking two accomplices yet to be positively identified, who will also be charged with attempted murder and discharging a weapon into an occupied building.

According to the FCSO, neither occupant of the home on McCarley Road was injured in the shooting. Thirteen or 14 rounds were fired according to the authorities, one of which passed within just a few feet of one of the occupants, who returned fire and struck the vehicle of Common and the other suspects.
