RMS begins coat, tennis shoe collection

There is still some good in the world – even though so often it feels that there isn’t anything to be hopeful for. That’s the message Russellville Middle School teacher Kelsey Pruitt wants to instill in her Student Council members – a truth they aim to demonstrate through holding a coat and tennis shoe drive.

“This is will be Russellville Middle School’s first time participating in this particular community service project,” said Pruitt, who serves as sponsor for the RMS student council. “We decided that several of our students and local community members could greatly benefit from a project such as this.”

The council is trying to collect warm coats and tennis shoes, both new and gently-used, for children and adults, with the donation period beginning today.

“We just hope to collect as many as possible,” Pruitt said. “We would love to be able to make sure each child or family in need is able to receive an item.”

Pruitt said donations will be distributed among the students throughout the Russellville City Schools system as well as the Russellville Department of Human Resources. Students will continue collecting items through Dec. 13.

“Anyone who wishes to make a donation can simply drop their items off at Russellville Middle School or call me and make arrangements for pick-up or drop-off,” Pruitt said.

And although the coat/shoe drive is designed at helping those in need, Pruitt said she sees it as benefiting her student council members who are organizing it, as well. “I think that this will help build strong character, help them understand the importance of helping one another and to always be thankful for what you already have,” Pruitt said.
