Tharptown opens season with wins over Waterloo

In season-opening games last week, the Tharptown boys and girls varsity teams both posted wins, getting 2016-2017 started on the right foot.

Linda Bahena had a breakout game in the Tharptown Lady Wildcats season opener. Bahena scored 20 points in helping Tharptown defeat the Waterloo Cougars 45-25. The Wildcats outscored the Cougars in each quarter of play.

Tharptown led Waterloo 6-2 at the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 19-10 by halftime. The Wildcats outpaced the Cougars 26-15 in the second half to get the win.

Behind Bahena, Jessica Wilson added eight points. Catie Dawson, Sierra Robinson and Klaudia Harris scored four points each. Hannah Campbell, Ameliah Dawson and Kaylee Bain added two points each.

The Wildcats varsity boys had to overcome a first quarter deficit to defeat the Waterloo Cougars 54-49 in their season opener.

Tharptown trailed Waterloo 18-11 at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats were able to claim a 30-29 one-point lead by halftime by outscoring Waterloo 19-11 in the second quarter. Tharptown extended that lead to 38-36 by the end of the third quarter and outpaced the Cougars 16-13 in the final period of play to secure the win.

Tharptown had three players score in double figures. Mikey Rosson led the way with 15 points. Braden Key and Levi McCormack added 12 points each for the Wildcats. Alex Argueta scored seven points, and Matt Hall contributed three points. Cole Daniel and Misael Saldana added two points each. Carson Petree finished with one point.
