Hubbard touts experience, future plans in re-election bid

“This is a council that sees what the City of Russellville really needs,” said Russellville City Councilman Lanny Hubbard, District 4 incumbent. “Russellville looks a whole lot different than it did five years. We have done tremendous work for the City of Russellville – paving, storm shelters – it’s been exciting to be a part of it.”

Hubbard said his accomplishments serving as part of council speak to his qualifications for re-election, and he wants to continue serving the city and help with forward progress. “If you ever stop, you won’t ever get started again,” Hubbard said.

He wants to work with STAR program, if re-elected, as well as other recreation opportunities for the city. “After the age of 5 or 6, you lose, because we have nothing here (for entertainment),” Hubbard said. “I would like to see a bowling alley here … Any time you leave out of Russellville, you’re hurting the city” – a motivation for providing expanded entertainment options within the city. Hubbard said he would also like to see a beachfront area at Sloss Lake. “It wouldn’t cost all that much money,” he said. “People can’t afford to go to Miami … but we could have something where they could go out here and save that money. I would like to see beach volleyball or something like that.”

Hubbard also cited the need for a compliance officer and animal control officer in Russellville – two things he would prioritize highly if re-elected. He also wants to implement a more affordable insurance plan for city employees.

“There are a lot of things that need to be done, but you can’t do them by yourself,” Hubbard said. “But I think the council we have now – we work well together. If you can sit down and show what needs to be done, we do it. I like that.”

He said his love for people and love of service make him a good councilman. He particularly enjoys being able to help people when they think it can’t be done.

Hubbard is president of Fairview Cemetery and a member of the Franklin County Civic Club. He is married to Norma and has four sons, two daughters and eight grandchildren.
